Types of Tea You Should Try in Sri Lanka

Anyone visiting Sri Lanka swears by the once-in-a-lifetime tea experience it provides. And, why not? The perfect amount of heat and moisture in the Sri Lankan highland make the perfect climate for high-quality tea. What’s interesting however is, the first tea plant in Sri Lanka came about to become a part of a botanical garden and not the hot liquid the world will eventually be addicted to. If you too are a tea lover then you’ll find yourself at no place better than Sri Lanka.

A little piece of trivia – The Camellia Sinensis plant (evergreen shrub or small tree) is capable of manufacturing 3 basic kinds of tea. The same plant is used to extract the various teas, and it is the soil and weather that differ with altitude causing the difference in taste.

Read on to know the various kinds of tea you can sip in Sri Lanka.

Black Tea

Black tea is the most commonly consumed tea in the world. Ceylon black tea, however, is the cleanest. Its leaves are plucked by only experienced tea pluckers. Two leaves and a bud are first plucked and gathered in large quantities and then go through the entire process of tea making. Finally, the leaves are categorised into different grades. The largest ones are called ‘Orange Pekoe’. The leaves get smaller and then ultimately form the dust grade. One grade is separated from the other on the basis of taste and colour.

The various grades of Ceylon tea you can try are:

English Breakfast, English Afternoon, Irish Breakfast, Earl Grey, Lapsang Souchong, Spiced Masala, Rose and French Vanilla, Black Tea with berries and more. While online hotel booking in Sri Lanka you can even ask if this tea will be served during breakfast.

Green Tea

The health benefits of Ceylon green tea have been recognised globally. As mentioned earlier, though it’s the same plant that manufactures all the available tea, the processes of making them differ. The leaves in the green tea are not fermented, thus having their antioxidants intact. It’s also free from pesticides and additives making it a healthier option.

When in Sri Lanka you can choose from the various green teas and refresh yourself. You can relish Real Leaf Green Tea, Jasmine Green Tea, Mint Green Tea, Lemongrass Green Tea, etc.

White Tea

White tea is as rare and unique as it sounds. This entirely handmade tea is made only out of buds picked very finely at dawn. The fermentation process is entirely skipped for these buds and they are hand-rolled individually. The tea consists of a very low caffeine rate, making it healthy and antioxidant rich. Each sip gives you a very subtle and light, yet a naturally sweet taste. The tea is also known as Silver tips in Sri Lanka. The various versions of white tea you can try are Real White tea, Ceylon Silver Tips, White Litchee Hand-rolled Tea, Jade Butterfly Handmade White, etc.

Whether you are staying in Hambantota hotels or anywhere on the island, you can easily find the teas mentioned above. Are you ready for the best tea experience?
